Enjoy a walking tour in Sibiu, the largest and wealthiest walled citadel built in Transylvania in the 12th century by German settlers. Sibiu was established by the German Saxons in the 12th century and has preserved its remarkable Old Town to this day, with colourful houses, spacious squares, and many legends. In 2007, Sibiu was designated European Capital of Culture. The walking tour begins at the Grand Square, where you can admire the Catholic Church and the Brukenthal Palace. Continue to Little Square, Liar’s Bridge, and Huet Square. Visit the Gothic-style Evangelical Cathedral, the landmark of Sibiu, built in the 14th century and home to an organ crafted by Slovak artisans in the mid-17th century. The 18th-century Catholic Church and the Byzantine-style Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity are also significant landmarks not to be missed. In the evening, transfer to a nearby village and enjoy dinner with residents. (B)
Travel to the small and picturesque Transylvanian village of Biertan, where you will visit the largest fortified church among the nearly 300 built in Transylvania between the 15th and 16th centuries. Owing to its historical and architectural significance, the church of Biertan is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around midday, arrive in Sighisoara, the best-preserved citadel in Transylvania. This medieval fortress, with its nine towers, cobbled streets, and colourful houses, is still inhabited and is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walking tour begins with a visit to the Clock Tower, the symbol of Sighisoara, followed by the birthplace of Count Dracula and the Church on the Hill. Return to Sibiu for overnight. (B)
