UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Romania

Begin the day with a drive to your first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Horezu Monastery—a masterpiece of the Brâncovenesc style, admired for its architectural harmony, sculpted detailing, religious compositions, votive portraits, and painted decorations. Enjoy free time for lunch. Continue to Sibiu, the 2007 European Cultural Capital. Upon arrival, explore the Old Town, divided between the Large Square and the Small Square. After free time for lunch, continue to Turda to visit one of the world’s oldest salt mines, now transformed into an extraordinary underground theme park featuring a ferris wheel, mini-golf, bowling, boating on the subterranean lake, and a sports arena. After breakfast, take a guided walk through Unification Square to see St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus. Continue into the historic Maramures region, home to famous UNESCO wooden churches—high timber structures with tall, narrow bell towers representing the distinct cultural tradition of this mountainous area. Visit the wooden church in Desesti and continue north to the unique Merry Cemetery in Sapanta, known for its lively, colourful tombstones depicting scenes from the deceased’s lives. After breakfast, enjoy an adventurous journey aboard the narrow-gauge Mocanita steam train along the Vaser Valley. The line, built with the 760 mm gauge typical of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is considered the last functioning forestry railway in Europe. The route takes you through curves, tunnels, and bridges along the river, through untouched wilderness inhabited by native wildlife such as bears and wolves. Enjoy a barbecue lunch during your stop. Today, discover Bucovina, renowned for its magnificent monasteries adorned with both interior and exterior frescoes, several of which are UNESCO sites. Begin with Moldovita Monastery, dating to the 16th century, where you can admire its rich frescoes, icons, church furnishings, and the prestigious “Golden Apple” award (1975). Continue to Voronet Monastery, often called the “Sistine Chapel of the East,” famous for its iconic Last Judgement fresco and unique “Voronet Blue.” Visit Humor Monastery before continuing to Piatra Neamt. After breakfast, travel toward Transylvania, driving through the dramatic Bicaz Gorges. Your destination is the medieval citadel of Sighisoara, founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the 12th century. Travel south through the Transylvanian countryside to visit two villages with UNESCO-listed fortified churches. These are part of seven fortified villages (six Saxon and one Székely), known for their preserved medieval settlement patterns. After breakfast, visit the UNESCO-listed fortified church in Prejmer. Return to Brasov and start your city tour in the Council Square (Marktplatz), built by the Saxons. Highlights include the Black Church—the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul—named after the fire of 1689. See also Rope Street, one of Europe’s narrowest passages. After free time for lunch, continue to Bran to explore the famous Dracula Castle. Originally built by Saxons in the 14th century, it served for centuries as a customs post between Wallachia and Transylvania and later became a royal residence gifted to Queen Maria. Today it is Romania’s most visited site, internationally renowned due to the Dracula legend. Optionally enjoy dinner at the Bran Castle Tea House, built in 1920 as Queen Maria’s reception salon. Travel to the mountain resort of Sinaia to visit Peles Castle—considered one of Europe’s most stunning castles and a masterpiece of German Neo-Renaissance architecture. Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873, it served as the royal family’s summer residence. After free time for lunch, depart by coach for Tulcea, known as the “Gateway to the Delta.” Check in at the hotel. Overnight in Tulcea. (B)

Today, embark on a boat excursion into the heart of Europe’s best-preserved natural ecosystem. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990, the Danube Delta is home to more than 300 bird species and serves as a major migratory crossroads for birds traveling from and toward Mongolia, Siberia, India, Africa, and China. Learn about the formation of the Delta and its wildlife while observing cormorants, egrets, swans, pelicans, and more. Lunch is served on the boat.
